A Closer Look at Hypnosis, Self-Hypnosis, Hypnotherapy and Other Mind Altering Techniques.
Hypnosis is a powerful way to influence the subconscious mind to bring about the results you are looking for in YOUR life!
Your subconscious mind is really the power center in your life. It is in charge of your unconscious behavior, your deep seated emotions, your habits, your involuntary body functions, your memories and more.
You can make a decision in your life such as to quit smoking or lose weight and unless you are in alignment with your subconscious you may not be successful. This is why hypnosis and hypnotherapy have become popular tools to help change behavior.
Hypnosis is simply a method of influencing your subconscious mind. When you are in a deeply relaxed state you conscious chattering mind steps aside somewhat or completely and allows entrance to the subconscious. In this state of deep relaxation words that are spoken can go directly to the subconscious mind.
The subconscious mind is like a computer. It not only stores information, meaning everything you've ever seen, heard, or experienced, but it also is programmed to carry out certain instructions.
The instructions your subconscious computer is programmed to carry out may not be in alignment with your desires. Like any computer your subconscious needs to be programmed regulary to bring about the desired results.
How is your subconscious computer programmed? Well, everything it sees, hears and experiences is the foundation for the programming. So if you want to lose weight, for example, and you constantly are saying to yourself "I am so fat", your subconscious says "O.K.!" If you are a smoker and constantly tell yourself "it's so hard to quit", your subconscious says "O.K.!"
It's really quite simple to re-program your subconscious mind once you learn how. You give it clear instruction as to what your goal is. For example: if you want to lose 25 pounds you don't say "I want to lose 25 pounds." Because your subconscious takes your words literally. Instead you would say "I am now 140 pounds" or "I intend I am at my goal weight of 140 pounds!"
Your subconscious mind then hears the instructions and goes about carrying out the order. You will unconsciously find yourself doing things differently to support the goal. The best part is your subconscious is the expert in what needs to happen for your body to achieve this goal. It will guide you to the way to eat and exercise that is right for you!
If you constantly affirm "I am a nonsmoker," then you have given your subconscious the order and you will find yourself losing your desire to smoke. Instead you might want to eat healthier and breathe more fresh air.
Hypnotherapy is the therapeautic use of hypnosis. A true hypnotherapist has experience in both therapy and hypnosis to know how to guide people through a process that will help them eliminate unwanted behavior and achieve their goals.
The term "Clinical Hypnotherapy" is often used to describe hypnosis in a clinical setting. Hypnosis is used in clinical settings in the dentist office to help people with their fear of dental work, or in surgery to help with anethesia. It is used as a weight loss tool, in smoking cessation practices and to help with mental illness, behavioral issues, relationships, and even issues of personal success.
Hypnotherapy can take a client much deeper than he could go if he were to use self-hypnosis. In a Clinical Hypnotherapy setting the use of conversational hypnosis allows for interaction between the client and therapist. The Hypnotherapist guides the client into a deep state of relaxation and is then able to help the client access information about what might be blocking his progress or causing a certain behavior.
In conversational hypnosis, the hypnotherapist can tell if a client needs to go deeper into a trance state or come out of it a bit. He can draw out information and make positive suggestions that are needed in each unique situation.
With self-hypnosis you can use this powerful tool to make positive changes in your life. Self-hypnosis is similar to going into a deep meditative state and consciously repeating positive programming statements while there. Another popular method of self-hypnosis is the self-hypnosis CD or tape. This is where you are guided into a state of hypnosis through the voice on the tape and then given a set of instructions or series of positive programming techniques are used to accomplish a given goal.
Other Mind Altering Techniques
Although Hypnosis is one of the most powerful ways to influence the subconscious mind there are other methods that have brought positive results to many people. This includes repeating affirmations on a daily basis, several times a day such as..."I am healthy and fit, slim and attractive!"
Repeating affirmations is successful for the same reasons as hypnosis. It is a type of positive programming of the subconscious mind.
Another technique is to actually write a page or two a day telling your subconscious mind who you are "really!" If you are 190 pounds and want to be 140 pounds you might write a page or two a day describing how your life is now that you are 140 pounds. You would write how you are feeling, what you are wearing, what your love life is like and so on...
The imagination is a very powerful part of any hypnosis or positive programming technique because the subconscious can't differentiate between what is real and what is imagined. You give it pictures or imaginary images of what your goal is so it can go to work for you to carry it out. Which brings me to the process of Visualization.
Visualization is a powerful tool for change and is used in all the above methods. You simply close your eyes and see, in your minds eye, the picture you want to create. You continue to hold this image of yourself, as you desire to be, and the more you hold this image, the more your subconscious will work to bring this picture into reality.
It is important when setting out to make positive change in your life to continue to keep your eyes focused on the goal, not on where you currently are. An important thing to remember is that where you are now is the result of the actions taken yesterday and where you are tomorrow is the result of the actions taken today. So keep your daily actions positive, hold a flattering image of yourself and believe in yourself and your ability to create a positive future.
